Boat Races in Wasilla |
|
The Scull Crew |
Laundry at
Black Spruce Campground and a couple of stops at the chapels to see when masses
were schedule and off to downtown Anchorage for the Saturday Farmers Market.
The market was huge. Many white canopy tents were in sight. Hundreds of people
going and coming from the market. Looking for a parking spot in this section of
town is like finding a parking spot in downtown Boston. We were two miles from
the market before we were able to pull up to a meter. (Free on the weekends) We
were going to take the bikes off the rack, but the traffic was too heavy for us
amateur bikers to tackle. We elected to go geocaching along Cook Inlet biking
path. We actually struck out here also and didn’t find any caches. That did it!
We’re heading north, out of town. Fifteen miles north, in Eagle River, we
stopped at a Fred Meyers grocery store. It’s a big store like Wal-Mart. Filling
up the cart with groceries and fresh pizza we moved on to Wasilla.
The
day was not completely lost. A major rowing completion was underway. Teams from
Anchorage, Seward, Cooper Landing, Soldotna, Kenai, Kasilof and Homer were
participating in the Moose Nugget Regatta. “Sculls” the name of those long
boats often seen on the Charles River back in Boston, Massachusetts and also
here in Wasilla Alaska. It was a
different experience to watch them, even getting out of the boats and carrying
them around on land.

Sacred Heart Church AKA our Campground |
A 5 o’clock
mass at Sacred Heart Church was next. Fr. Scott Garrett met us after mass. He
said that when, in the Air Force, he was stationed at Pease Air Force Base in
Portsmouth, NH. We had dinner in the camper later and decided to dry camp and
park in the nice quite church parking lot.
That is what
we did and saw
